Review: Maleficent movie review"

Fairy tales are popular to be adapted into movies. The trend for these adaptions is to make them dark and brooding like Snow White and the Huntsman. Maleficent is not as dark as the trailers suggest. Bear in mind that it is by Disney. Disney are always known for kid-friendly movies even for live-action such Alice in Wonderland and Oz the Great and Powerful. Sure, this movie may feel gloomy but the spirit of it is actually more light-hearted than serious. There is no serious sense of threat. Maleficent is at most an entertaining one and a half hours CGI spectacle.

The story: Before watching this, I'm sure viewers will know who Maleficent is even without watching the classic animated movie by Disney. She has an iconic evil image. The director is more interested in re-imagining her character in this live-action movie. Fans of the classic should be aware that this movie is not a remake and it is catered to her so there may be a few major changes. Story is as straight-forward as what Disney movies have been. The expensive movie is well shot and looks visually beautiful. The extensive use of CGI over-powers the story and emotions at times. The few action scenes such as the battle in the first act and the climax look decent but rely on CGI too much. Acting wise is good. Angelina Jolie does a good job in portraying Maleficent. Supporting roles such as Elle Fanning and Sharlto Copley do fine acting. Music by James Newton Howard sounds fine although it brings nothing entirely new to the table.

Overall: It is a pretty good looking movie if you are interested in movies that rely on visuals to tell a story. Otherwise the movie is a little short to make an impact in characters' development. Not to say that it is entirely bad. It is saved by the cast's performances and great visuals and these can make up an entertaining watch. I hope there will be a director's cut someday. I am sure there are more scenes in the cutting room.

Rating: 3.4/5 Review: "The Spirit of Ramayana" (103 minutes) "A passable Thai horror movie with an interesting concept but weak execution." As a low-budget horror movie, it has enough entertainment values. In the recent years, there are a few strong Thai horror movies with decent production values and there are many mediocre low-budget horror movies. The Spirit of Ramayana is somewhat in the middle. It may not look that polished but its themes and concept are intriguing enough. The story: The narrative is straight forward however its editing made the movie look messy and disjointed. It is a simple story about Mintra, a young dancer who is rejected for the main role because she cannot pull off an evil and sensual side. However, a spirit helps her to unleash her dark side. On paper, it sounds like a supernatural Black Swan. It lacks the emotional depth of Black Swan as the director seems only interested in churning out cheap scares. As the plot develops fur...
Best and Worst movies of 2011 2011 is over! It sees many good movies so it was kind of tricky to list the best 4 movies of 2011. It had been a good year for movies. Let's see if 2012 is any better. 1.Transformers: Dark of the Moon Rating: 4.5/5 It is one of the best 3D movie ever. It has cool action, great 3D and robots. It may be the final Transformers for Michael Bay. Only thing that can be improved is that rushed out ending. Other than that, it could be 2011 best action movie. 2.Sucker Punch Rating: 4.5/5 It is sad to see the critics slamming this movie. I find its presentation kind of cool and unique. The action is not bad too. Zack Synder really has a sense of cool visual which the movie a more interesting view. 3.Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Rating: 4.5/5 The end is finally here. Although it is the most action-packed movie in the franchise, I can't help but feel a little disappointed with the climax. I wanted a longer and more epic battle between Harry and Voldemo...
Rating: 3.9/5 Review: "Iron Man 2 DVD review" Well, for me, it is kind of disappointing. Seeing the lack of action and three short action scenes disappoints me as this movie has been reported to have a higher budget than the first one. Another thing disappointing is the pace. The pace in the first Iron Man movie is intense, it is filled with intense moments and quirky humour. This one's pace is slower with all the melodrama of Tony trying to live his "broken" life as he thinks he will soon die. And he starts being an ass, some drunk ass, and blah blah.... The story: The first third of the movie is not bad, still holding up some interesting moments like the villian, Ivan in a car race scene. The second third is where the story slows down, luckily it is bearable, when Tony behaves like an ass, drinking and dancing like some nut monkey. Then there is an action scene with Tony and his best friend in armour. The last third is the climax between Tony and Ivan which is...
