Review: "Transformers: Age of Extinction movie review"
Michael Bay is back for the forth time in the soon tired franchise. To be honest, I like Michael Bay and enjoyed all of his Transformers movies. But seeing him return to the franchise made me weary. Three times the explosions is enough and yet a forth explosion happens. The good news for this is that it still has fantastic action, explosions, CGI and on top, it has fresh characters to carry the weight. The not so good news is that it has amazingly the longest runtime in the franchise which drags down the whole movie.
The story: Michael Bay wanted to start afresh with this. It is clear with the different title font, a fresh set of new characters, less humour and even a different theme song by Imagine Dragons. However these are all that have changed. Michael's extended explosive noisy action, stereotype characters and others still stay the same. The formula of the story is almost like the last three movies. A little slow in the beginning, action ramps up in the second act before blowing up everything in sight in the third act. Michael realised that he has blown up almost everything in his trilogy so he tried to better the action by staging it in a different location (Hong Kong gets the explosive treatment in the third act). The new characters surprisingly hold the movie. Mark Wahlberg plays a protective father who turns out to be an action star. Nicola Peltz plays his daughter who is purely an eye-candy for the movie. The characters are not as annoying as some in the trilogy. The robots have more distinctive characters. The familiar music by Steve Jablonsky still sounds epic.
Overall: Sure, it still has its flaw especially its worst crime of the longest runtime but Michael still crafts an exciting explosive adventure with stunning CGI. I won't blame the critics for hating it because after walking out of the cinema, you will think if there is still any point in making the forth entry (It is still as noisy as ever). It is definitely better than Revenge of the Fallen and it is still a decent entry. Although it seems that Michael will be back for the fifth movie, I do hope to see another director having his take on one of the biggest franchise.
