Review: "Gotham Season 1 TV review"
The series is inspired by the Batman franchise and not based on it. There are changes and even new characters are added. And note that it is called Gotham, not Batman. Season 1 is a decent character piece that sees character developments of some of the major villains like Penguin, Riddler and Catwoman.
Episode 1 to 22: As usual, the first episode has enough action and story to hold my attention. Generally, most of the episodes move briskly packed with enough information and characterisation. However, starting from episode 12, things become more tense with the battle of the wits and twists. The villains' character developments move in a teasing way; not fast nor slow. It is long enough to lead to the next season. Gordon, supposedly the main character, is alright as a main character but at times, he is annoyingly arrogant, brash and straight-forward. The development of the young Bruce Wayne is decent but the main focus is not him.
Most of the episodes feel like a generic TV police/crime investigation show's plot. What sets it apart is that it is just in the world of Gotham. Music is serviceable. Production values are decent for a TV show.
Overall: With so many characters to develop, sometimes the series feel overcrowded and overstuffed. However thankfully, the pace is kept brisk to get things going. Some fans may be disappointed with some changes in the the villains' development. Although it has its flaws, it still serves an entertaining and serviceable entry to the Batman franchise.
