Review: "Deadpool movie review"
"The non-linear straight-forward plot and exciting action make Deadpool a worthy watch in the Marvel's film franchise."
Kudos to Ryan Reynolds and the team for insisting that this film is made true to the nature of the source material. Superhero films are often classified as PG-13 with the exception of Watchmen, Blade and a few more. So imagine my surprise when it is announced that it has received an R rating in USA especially a 20th Century Fox film. What you get is loads of bloody fun with some pretty neat action.
The story: What makes this stand out from the other superhero films is the presentation. Sure, it has same old love story and superhero origin story. But the switching back and forth in present and past is a wise choice. Deadpool starts in the middle and then unravels the origin before hitting the climax. If the story is told in a linear form, it will be forgettable. Now that leaves the action. Although there are not many big action set pieces, the two major action scenes, the opening and the ending, are thrilling, fast and hard-hitting. The first action scene, set at the highway, tells the tone of the film. Sarcastic, vulgar, violent and funny. The action ramps up in the explosive CGI-heavy climax. Deadpool is an unique anti hero and is obviously the main draw in this. Luckily, the director knows when is enough to Deadpool's wisecracking jokes. I actually got a bit worried when I saw the trailers filled with those jokes and thought they would become unbearably over-the-top. Acting and music is serviceable. CGI is great looking for a budget of US$58 million.
Overall: So far, it is the best surprise-hit film of the year. From the trailers, it could easily be a forgettable trashy entertainment at best. Fortunately, the earnest acting by Ryan and direction by Tim Miller make the film a worthy watch. It is bold and does what other superhero films dare not. Bold, violent, exciting. It has set a high bar for R-rated superhero films. With a sequel announced, I just hope the team will be complacent with the success and deliver a rushed product.
