The five Best and Worst of 2015

Best

1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

This is probably one of the surprise hit in 2015. Although the trailers showed promise, I didn't expect a lot from the new vision of J.J Abrams. It is not the best and it has some flaws. Still Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a solid entertainment from the trust-worthy J.J Abrams.

2. Mad Max: Fury Road

I also wasn't expecting a lot from a film that is based on a cult franchise. However, I had a pleasant surprise that it is packed with thrilling explosive action, great cinematography, a cool music score and a thrilling cat-and-mouse plot. People are saying it is one of the best action movies ever. I wouldn't call it that but it is a pretty damn good one.

3. Avengers: Age Of Ultron

It is borderline annoying as it is so over-crowded packed with superheroes and villains you heck care. Thankfully Josh Whedon is smart enough not to go over-the-top. He still neatly packaged the film with enough action, humour and drama. Other than the over-stuffed feeling, it makes a decent blockbuster to watch on a weekend.

4. Ant-man

2015's latest superhero flick is a lower-budget but entertaining blockbuster. The solo film is a fresh watch for the year that is populated with franchises. It has a balance of comedy, special effects and action. Ant-man may not have the scope of other Marvel's films but it has the heart that proves to be as entertaining as others.

5. Parasyte Part 2

I know this received criticisms on the rushed plot and multiple endings. Parasyte Part 2 is decent finale that goes all out with special effects, drama and epic music. At times, it has the potential to be more than just a visual spectacle but it vanishes due to the runtime. It may not be the top 5 but it is near.

____________________________________________________________________________

2015 has its fair share of decent movies. Ip Man 3, Everest, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation and Chappie are some that is worth the mention. Some of which are somehow disappointing. Spectre, James Bond's latest outing is decent but lacks the energy of the previous Craig's films and is too long. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 is also decent but the franchise could make do without Part 1. After a long teaser, Part 2 felt a little weak in delivering a rousing ending. Some of the other decent but could be better are Sicario, Fantastic Four, Terminator Genisys.

Worst

1. 6 Years

This indie romance does not work for me. It is short but feels overlong. There isn't any real plot and character's development isn't much. The actors and actresses are wasted as none of their characters are likeable. Sorry but it is boring.

2. Tiger House

This is painfully bad to watch. Sure, it is low-budget so the whole film is confined in a house. But there is no excuse to make it dull. There is some promising suspense but fizzles out as soon as it starts. One of the rare redeeming factor is actress Kaya Scodelario.

3. The Gallows

How many times must a horror movie be shot in a lost-found footage format? I find it purely annoying when one does it for sake of budget. This is no different. Plus the 'iconic' killer is ruined by a lame story. All you get 1 and an half hour of headache.

4. Muck

This is literally one of the worst film I have seen ever. I don't give a hoot for the girls when the whole film is dull nonsense without a plot and thrills. To make it even worse is that it is shot dimly that it is impossible to see. There is no redeeming factor in this.

5. The boy next door

Another boring thriller that has nothing decent to show except Jennifer Lopez. Everything in this film is no surprise. In fact, I think the concept has been done to death.

____________________________________________________________________________

2015 surprisingly has more bad films than I thought it would have. Not in the list but some have special mentions. Focus, the Will Smith film, has nothing much to offer. Mortdecai, the Johnny Depp's comedy, is surprisingly unfunny and does not make sense. Gangnam Blues is a disappointing Korean film that drags for a long time. Other borderline boring films are The Curse of Downers Grove, weird Japanese film, Tag and Careful what you wish for.

____________________________________________________________________________

2016 looks like a big year as it is jam-packed with superheroes film (Batman VS Superman, Suicide Squad, Captain America, Doctor Strange, X-Men, Deadpool). more sequels (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, Now you see me 2, Kung Fu Panda 3, Bourne 5, Underworld 5), adaptations (The Jungle Book, Tarzan, Warcraft). It is hard not to get excited. Let it be a good year in cinema!

Rating: 3.6/5 Review: "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D season 2 TV review" Season 2 has improved greatly. Starting straight from the massive cliffhanger in season 1, season 2 is more tense, action-packed, darker and better paced. I think season 1 took its time to introduce its characters before diving into the action. The time is spread out to individual characters' development. More twists and turns make the season a stark improvement. Episode 1-22: Skye has discovered her powers and is learning how to cope with it. Meanwhile, the team has its problems. Coulson seems to be hiding secrets. In fact, everybody has secrets. More powers are unleashed. It is a little surprising that Marvel is bold enough to veer the series to a darker tone by amping up the number of deaths and more violence. The whole season has little humour and moves at a brisk pace without really pausing. As the tension between human and superhuman increases by each episode, it is an exciting season that w
Rating: 3.5/5 Review: "From Vegas To Macau 2 movie review" "Loads of fun in Wong Jing's bigger sequel." Wong Jing is back with more madness, action, explosion and a longer runtime. As every sequel tries to top its original in every way, From Vegas To Macau 2 is no different. Lots of explosion, lots of wacky humour and more CGI, if these are your entertainment, the movie will do you no wrong. From the opening gun fight to the CGI climax, the story is kept brisk to keep your attention in check. The story: Chow Yun-fat is back as the titular gambler, Ken, with the magic hand. This time, the movie exaggerates his skills with CGI poker cards until it almost becomes a fantasy. But that's to be expected in a Wong Jing's movie. This time, the location is shifted to Thailand where Mark (Nick Cheung), an accountant in a money-laundering syndicate, DOA, is chased by Interpol and DOA. Ken has to save him and help his protege, Vincent (Shawn Yue). Wong Ji
Rating: 4/5 Review: "The Hobbit: An unexpected Journey 3D movie review" This is the highly anticipated prequel to The Lords of the Ring movies. As a stand alone movie, it does pretty well to engage audiences with its great special effects and fantasy creatures. I cannot compare this with the first trilogy as I can hardly remember it although I will catch it later. But as it seems, this is more lighter than the serious first trilogy. Sure this has its fair share of intense battles but this is more light-heart. The story: With a runtime of 2 hours and 49 minutes, you can be sure that this will take its sweet time to get the adventure going which is true. After a brief action-packed introduction, the movie moves slower. The first half and hour sees a hobbit's unwillingness to go for an adventure as the other dwarves plan to steal their treasures and take what is rightfully theirs. After the hobbit agrees, the fantasy adventure starts and following it are dangers.
