Review: "The Magicians season 1 TV review"

People are saying that The Magicians is like an adult Harry Potter. Though there is the common theme of magic, the settings and characterization are completely different. Magic in The Magicians is seen as a dangerous form. It is not glamorized and some side effects are nasty. No character here is perfect, there is no role model. Everyone is stripped down to their individual behavior and thoughts. What you get in the end is a decent TV series that give you a reason to follow through the whole season.

Episode 1-13: I admit that there are some episodes that seem to go nowhere in plot development. One thing commendable is that you never know what will happen to the characters next. Right down to the end of the first episode where the mysterious villain attacks the school. The characters are vulnerable. Although some of their characteristics are annoying, they feel real. Most of their actions have believable motivations. Most of the episodes are entertaining. The rest of the episodes are still entertaining but feel lackluster in terms of moving the plot forward and act as a filler for the 13 episode season. The humor helps bring the gloomy series to a slightly lighter mood. But there is real tension where the characters are threatened. As it ends with a shocking finale, it is clear that the creators are not afraid to put the characters in dire threats.

Overall: For a Syfy series, it is pretty decent. Decent cinematography and special effects. I have not read the source materials so I can't tell how faithful it is. This stands out among the popular superheroes, supernatural romances and crime TV genre for its characterization, real threats and it is not afraid of not glamorizing its theme; magic. With season 2 announced, I am eager to see what lies for the characters in future.

Rating: 4.5/5 Review: "Man of Steel movie review" With all the hype from the trailers, I must say this is what it looks to be expected. I have to say that this is the biggest and epic superhero movie yet. This treats destructions like child's play. It is also the most explosive superhero movie. There are so much explosions that they could literally make you exhausted from watching all those. Although this is directed by Zack Snyder, this does not have much of his trademark except the visuals. His slo-mo trademark is not featured. Instead, the action is rapid fast. Man of Steel is a good entertainment with exciting action scenes and visuals but at the same, a somehow touching human drama. The story: We get an extended opening scene on Krypton where Kal-El is just born. However the planet is going to be destroyed with General Zod adding to the problem. To save Kal-El, he has to be sent to another planet known as Earth. What is interesting about the movie that it do...
Rating: 3.5/5 Review: Taken DVD review Taken is a new action movie that makes the audiences want more hard and gritty action flicks. I can see that now. Taken has the drama (Yawn!) and the realistic action (Like the Borne movies). Clocking at only 1 and a half hour, the movie starts off slow with drama. After half and hour pass, it goes straight to the intensity and non-stop realistic action. I don't like the slow start. As it is only 1 and a half hour, it do not have the time for slow characters' development. It should drive straight to the action, unless it clocks around 2 hours. The story: It seems to be the usual kidnapping movies where the bad guys kidnap some random girl/boy and ask for ransom. But in this, they kidnap young women to become sex-slaves. A father of a kidnapped daughter is enraged and goes to Paris where his daughter is. "I will find you! I will kill you!" He says to the bad guys. He starts punching and kicking people to hell. He kicks men's b...
Rating: 4.3/5 Review: "Alita: Battle Angel IMAX movie review" (122 minutes) This is Robert Rodriguez's biggest movie yet and costs a staggering US$200 million. It is easy to see why. The sets are massive loaded with CGI and even many characters are CGI. Alita: Battle Angel has everything a Blockbuster has; action, romance, drama, CGI, epic music. Robert's direction is confident despite him handling a large-scale movie for the first time. As this is based on the manga, it suffers the cram condensation of a few volumes. The story: The start is surprising as it has no big opening action scene (we are used to seeing a big opening action in most Blockbuster). The sets may be big scaled but the opening feels intimate in terms of emotions. We see Dr. Dyson (Christoph Waltz) finding and rebuilding a female cyborg, Alita (Rosa Salazar). The first 20 minutes are engaging as we discover Iron City from the eyes of Alita. From then on, the pace quickens as we are introduce...
